The Core Sound Waterfowl Museum depicts the heritage of Carteret County’s Down East region, with specific emphasis on waterfowl and the art of decoy-making. Visitors to the museum learn just how important hunting, fishing and the skill of carving decoys was and still is to the area. Surrounding the museum is a 4-acre waterfowl habitat area that has earned numerous accolades from the nation's top commissions and foundations on wildlife and parks. The museum and habitat are located just off the Atlantic at the east end of Harkers Island.
